Offshore 2001
Fat Boy Slim, Ben Harper, Bomfunk MC's
13/4/2001, Showgrounds, Melbourne.
Well, having just got home from Offshore 2001, I thought it a good idea to do a quick review for y'all. Overall a fine day was had by one Andy Neumann (thanks very much for the ticket Trev, sorry you couldn't make it!) For Tilley's benefit, the gig was at the showgrounds this year (instead of out bush).

Rocked up at about noon, saw some of Lo-Tel who I was expecting big things from. Unfortunately didn't get 'em. They were OK, but decided I better head for the beer instead. Hung around and watched Augie March after that, who were quite smashing. Very mellow. Given the perfect weather, nothing could've been better, or so I thought (read rest of the email) than kicking back on the grass listening to these lads - from Shepp I might add... :) Obligatory look in at Game Over at this point, who were actually pretty good. Saw some Machine Gun Fellatio (who were shit - no more to add there).

Highlight of the day came at 2:30 when the sun was high, as were most of the patrons. The Resin Dogs came on, played the funkiest, most appropriate, mentally challenging and aural soothing music of the day. They had a breakdancer who was amazing (at one point strapped on a helmet and went the headspin for a full 3 minutes I'd reckon). In any case I would HIGHLY recommend checking these guys out if you get a chance. Bit of a dead patch next - checked out Superheist (yawn) then 28 Days (see last yawn). Went a bit leftfield and checked out some comedy (The 3 Canadians) who were pretty funny.

Waning a tad lately in my mind, I was hesitant to see You Am I for what seemed like the 538th time, but nonetheless gave them the benefit of the doubt. Well, they opened with Purple Sneakers and I was there to stay. Set list goes something like:
* Purple Sneakers
* Ass Kicking Lady from the North West (as intro'd by Tim)
* Baby Clothes
* Pizza Guy
* Trike
* Damage
* Berlin Chair
* Junk
* Tuesdays
* Get Up
* Soldiers
* New Song
* Jewels & Bullets
* How Much Is Enough

So, all in all, a pretty kick ass set, and they pretty much proved (for the 538th time) that they are the most rockin band in Australia. What a stage show... Then, for something completely different, checked out the Bomfunk MCs. They were actually very good. Great sound, great show. Didn't recognise most of their stuff, but hey, had a boogie anyways. The Hellacopters were next, rocking in their own swedish way. Sound was pretty shit, but I could tell they were playing well. Still relatively impressive. Ben Harper (after a friggin 30 minute wait) came on next. Most of is set revolved around "The Will To Live" and "Burn to Shine" albums (which I was pretty happy about). He managed to slip in 3 covers(!) which were pretty amazing considering they were:
a.) Voodoo Chile
b.) Kashmir
c.) Whole Lotta Love
He finished on Faded, which was very cool.
Saw some of the Suicidal Tendencies, who looked very much like an old tired punk band (ironic that...) Finally, la big finale, el fizzo the Great, was Fat Boy Slim. Wasn't much impressed by that. It seemed like he was having fun though, and that's really the main thing isn't it....

Overall, a good day was had. Nowhere near as big as the BDO, but still one tired little Neumann ready for beddy-byes.
