The fire(s)

I wanted to take a minute to reflect on what's happening within my beautiful, wonderful state of Victoria right now. This entry is more for me to look back on in years to come and remember what was happening at this point in time. Given the mass media coverage this week, a lot of people (including myself) are already overwhelmed by all the tragic tales and grief in the community, so I'll understand if you skip reading this. I almost skipped writing it...

5 days ago, Saturday 7th Feb 2009, was the hottest day on record for Melbourne; 46.4 degrees in the CBD, even hotter elsewhere. And as a result a number of fires started around the state that escalated into utter devastation and something that won't be forgotten in a long time in Australia. I've been absolutely heartbroken and brought to tears a number of times in the past few days, hearing stories of those that survived, and didn't, the bushfires here. Whole towns have been literally and virtually wiped off the map, over 180 people have lost their lives, many in horrific circumstances trying to outrun and escape the firestorm, and over 1000 houses are gone. It's the human face of this tragedy which is killing me - the pictures of families, in particular children, who became victims of the bushfires. It's also inconceivable to me that any of these fires were deliberately lit, but it's a harsh reality that some probably were. Australia, as a community, has pulled together to react quickly and support those who need it, and the various organisations involved (Police, CFA, DSE, Red Cross, etc.) have been nothing less than spectacular in their dedication and commitment. But even with a sense of purpose and a groundswell of support, there is still an underlying current of grief and loss in the community, which is understandable.

It's just such a sad, emotional time for Victorians, and it's not over yet. The fires are still burning, and people and towns are still under threat. There are still bodies to be found, that will no doubt push the toll over 200 dead. Just tonight there is talk of major fires joining together outside of Melbourne and threatening the outer eastern suburbs. It is just so relentless... I just pray that nature favours us and the blazes are not just under control but extinguished before any more damage is done and lives are lost.

Still seems a little surreal, eh ? Like a post-September-11 modd in our town. Hardship & adversity are what Aussies do best, and I'm been proud and amazed in the recent days - as much as saddened and grief-struck.

I've said more prayers in the last week than the previous 10 years (not particularly religious).

Marysville in particular is what has gutted me - with the loss of life, and the entire town gone - I've been there 100's of times - with a friends bush house nearby (Buxton).

That photo of the Koala with the CFA fire-fighter will endure the test of time.

Thanks for doing a post - couldn't manage to put *MY* words together.
