Coincidence? I think not...
Well, it seems like ages since I blogged last. I've been a busy little boy at work, kicking off a couple of new projects, and (shock, horror!) some real work myself. It's been quite enjoyable though.
An interesting thing happened yesterday - I was talking with a friend at work about guitar, and playing in bands. He asked if I would ever consider doing anything seriously musically. At the time I said nah, only for fun. Thinking about it later in the day, I thought it would be good to play in a band again, just to have a bit of a muck around. I wouldn't actually mind playing drums in a band - in the past couple of years I've really become a huge fan of drumming (when done well). I think Mike Portnoy and Martin Lopez have really opened my eyes up to a world of musicianship in drumming. Sometimes I'll listen to songs now just for the drumming. Anyway, I digress. Thinking about bands, I thought it would be fun. And what happens? I get home and Steph tells me that some of the husbands from the mother's group play instruments and might want to start a band for fun. So far there's another guitarist (besides me) and a vocalist. Now we need that elusive rythm section... And they're into metal! Could be fun, let's see if it goes anywhere. Secretly I'm hoping they like black metal and we start a full on death metal band. Either that or a Finnish soft-metal band where we dress up like monsters.

yeah, i'm a big fan of rhythm, that's why i got that drumkit and djembe and bongos, but it's so hard to do well, especially if you never practise...
i reckon bass and drums really make or break songs, and there's so much stuff in the top40 that's left seriously wanting in that department. obviously you need some great riffs and good delivery of fine lyrics, but too many songs try to rely on a few obvious chords, worn out lyrical matter and the rest is just in the background. they may as well use casio drums and bass.
good luck on the rhythm section hunt, and i'm really looking forward to seeing you in troll/orc costume - release the Lordi within you!
